The Community Dinner at the Zion Community Commons has opened the door for accessible nutritional meals in our neighborhood that subverts the shame and disparaging nature of traditional food shelves. There is no charity, there is only community. "You can sit with us" is the grounding belief of Eureka Compass's mission.
Planting People, Growing Justice. Interview with Dr. Artika Tyner
Author, educator, and Hamline Midway neighbor Dr. Artika Tyner founded Planting People Growing Justice to inspire a love of reading, address literacy gaps, and amplify diverse voices in publishing. Through book giveaways, workshops, and community events, this Black-owned nonprofit is empowering the next generation of leaders and storytellers while fostering equity and representation in literature.

Meet some of the board members of the Hamline Midway Coalition. HMC is your district council built on engagement and empowerment. We work with our neighbors and for our neighbors. The district council system in St. Paul, MN includes 17 community-based volunteer organizations that works to represent the interests of local residents and businesses. The Hamline Midway Coalition is one of these district councils in St. Paul that aims to improve the quality of life in the Hamline Midway neighborhood.
Neighborhood Notes: The Hive Collaborative
Welcome to our first installment in HMC's ongoing "Neighborhood Notes" video series aimed at spotlighting the businesses, organizations, artists, and initiatives that make Hamline Midway notable! Our very first feature highlights a local theater at the heart of Hamline-Midway, "The Hive Collaborative." We were very excited to attend their Halloween open house in October of 2023! Hear directly from Laura and Eric about their story and vision for The Hive Collaborative in the neighborhood and see what the BUZZ is all about!
Midway Project
The Midway Food & Empowerment Project is a resident-led initiative that began in 2020 to address food insecurity in the Hamline Midway neighborhood. What started as a short-term response to the uprisings following the murder of George Floyd has grown into a long-term, community-driven effort to provide food, household essentials, and support to families each week. Entirely volunteer-run, the project fosters not only access to resources but also a strong sense of community and care among neighbors.
Open Hands Midway
"All Are Welcome", three times a week Open Hands Midway is serving the Hamline Midway and Union Park community through meals and produce. With free programs and services, guests are invited to takeout prepared meals, and bring produce and other goods home.
We Love the Midway Business Celebration Brunch
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our inaugural We Love the Midway Business Celebration Brunch on February 22! We had an incredible morning celebrating the local businesses that make our neighborhood such a special place. From delicious food and door prizes to meaningful connections and community building, this event was all about strengthening our local business network. FAMM Rally
On November 17, 2024, over 100 people — supporters, families, and members of Families Against Military Madness and the Climate Justice Committee — came together at Painter Park in Minneapolis for a family-friendly rally. The event called for an end to endless wars that harm the environment and demanded funding for climate action instead of war. Powerful speakers energized the crowd, while families got creative with kite decorating, sign-making, and noisemakers. The rally wrapped up with a picket march around Painter Park, followed by time for kids to fly kites and play with a flower-shooting anti-war tank display.
Twin Cities Ceasefire Choir Grief Ritual
Good Friday grief action organized by Good Trouble Sings, Mennonite Action MN, and the Twin Cities Ceasefire Choir. We call for an immediate, permanent ceasefire; restoration of humanitarian funding to the UNRWA; an end to arms funding for Israel; and immediate divestment of MN state funds from Israel. WE DO THIS ‘TIL WE FREE US.

Our Evening with Soul
“Our Evening with Soul” showcases a unique business class titled The Power of Soul and Spirit in Business, which emphasizes creating healthy, human-centered workplaces. The video captures a celebratory event where students present creative projects that reflect their passions, from bucket lists to scrapbooking and motorcycle rides. Through these expressions, the course highlights the importance of bringing one’s whole self to work, nurturing creativity, and building community. Faculty and students reflect on how soul and spirit are essential to innovation, well-being, and sustainable success in the business world.

London Calling: Paralympian from PSU
Jen Armbruster, Coordinator of Inclusive Recreation at Portland State University and a veteran goalball athlete, heads to the 2012 Paralympic Games in London to defend Team USA’s gold medal. In this video, she shares her journey from losing her vision as a teenager to becoming a world-class Paralympian and how sports shaped her life. Jen reflects on her love for the fast-paced, physical game of goalball and the importance of inclusive recreation, family, and resilience on and off the court.

Rahel's parents brought their family from Ethiopia to Portland 18 years ago so that they could provide better educational opportunities for their children. As far as they were concerned, there was no better place than PSU. Rahel earned her BA from PSU in marketing, and now she is happy to be back at her alma mater. PSU Vikings at the Portland Starlight Parade
The Portland Starlight Parade offers funky, eclectic fun for the whole family. One of the most popular events of the annual Rose Festival, the parade draws more than 250,000 spectators to downtown Portland.
